In our first look at the Hyams Beach project, 'A Home by the Sea', we spoke of the cedar beams and the quiet rituals of life by the sea. But behind every "big deep breath" home is a series of intentional, professional decisions.
For the homeowner, Julia, the challenge wasn't a lack of beautiful things—she had been a Few & Far collector for over a decade. The challenge was resolution: how to take a lifetime of "found" pieces and weave them into a cohesive narrative that didn't feel accidental.
As our founder, Tara, often says: "A home should be a collection of moments—a dialogue between the rugged world outside and the intentional comfort within." To achieve this, our Senior Stylists, Michelle and Gonia, stepped in to turn a decade of collecting into a thoughtfully resolved home.
I. Establishing the "Foundations"
When a home has a strong architectural personality—like the pitched cedar ceilings of this chalet—the furniture needs to provide a grounding counter-weight.
Michelle’s Note: "We moved away from 'fussy' silhouettes. When you have those soaring timber rafters, you need pieces with a certain visual weight. We opted for generous, low-slung forms in solid timber and forged iron to ground the room. It’s about creating a sense of safety and enclosure within a vast, airy space."
II. A Palette of "Non-Coastal" Tones
While the world knows Hyams Beach for its white sand, the interior of this home was designed for the bush. To avoid the cliché of blue-and-white, our Stylists curated a palette based on Lichen and Earth.
Gonia’s Note: "The secret to this palette was looking at the 'middle distance'—not the horizon. We pulled the silver-green of the eucalyptus trees pressing against the windows and paired them with muted sage, clay, and sand. It ensures that when you’re inside, the transition to the outdoors is seamless and calming."
III. Resolving the "Something Found"
Our client, Julia, had accumulated many one-of-a-kind pieces, including pieces from Few & Far, over the years. The professional secret to styling these is what we call The Tension of the Pair.
The Design Logic: An antique only looks intentional when it is contrasted against something modern. We paired Julia’s weathered, storied antiques with our most refined, clean-lined resins and contemporary ceramics. This "tension" is what prevents a home from feeling like a museum and instead makes it feel like a lived-in space.
IV. From Concept to Final Layer: Our Design Services
As Julia noted, “We had the pieces, but we wanted their eye on completing the whole picture. Michelle and Gonia took about a minute to understand what we were trying to achieve.” This is the heart of the Few & Far Design Service. We don't just sell furniture; we solve the visual puzzle of your home. Whether you are starting with a blank canvas or, like Julia, looking to harmonise a decade of collecting, our process is designed to be a calm, supportive experience.

Whether you require a full-scale transformation or a simple room refresh, our designers work with you to select the foundations and "Found" treasures that will make your home truly your own.
From the first concept board to the final placement of a hand-carved vessel, our team is dedicated to making the design process a calm, supportive, and inspiring journey.
For many of our projects, like 'A Home by the Sea', the relationship begins organically. Often, clients visit one our stores in Rosebery, Berry, Bowral, Thirroul or Huskisson, fall in love with our aesthetic, and want to bring that feeling into their own space.
The journey truly begins on the ground. Our Design Services team, Michelle and Gonia, spend time in the space to understand not only the physical layout but how it feels to experience the home day-to-day. We look at the light, the architecture, and the surrounding environment—in this case, the unique threshold between the coastal bush and the sea.
From these initial observations, we develop a tailored concept, thoughtfully curating pieces that feel layered and intentional. We then present the vision to our clients:
In-Store Experience: Whenever possible, we invite clients into our design studio for a personal "touch and feel" presentation, allowing them to adapt concepts on the spot.
Virtual Flexibility: For projects with specific timing or location needs, we present virtually, maintaining a collaborative process regardless of the distance.
Once the direction is refined, our team moves into the procurement phase. We manage all the details behind the scenes—coordinating with our global artisans and managing logistics—to ensure every element comes together seamlessly and on schedule.
The final stage is always the most rewarding moment. Our styling team provides a full white-glove installation where the space truly comes to life. This is where the vision is realised in a way that feels both elevated and effortless—transforming the brief into a home that is ready to be presented and lived in.
Drawing from years of experience in homewares and design, we celebrate conscious buying, artisanal craftsmanship, and are driven by the belief that every space should be a collection of pieces that tell stories from past and present and make ways for the narrative to continue in the future. Our mission is to inspire, guide, and help you weave a unique and meaningful story within your own walls.
